The word “serendipity” was coined by British author Horace Walpole in 1754, in a letter he wrote to his friend, Horace Mann, the English resident in Florence. Serendip was the former name of Sri Lanka. Horace Walpole “I once read a silly fairy tale, called ”The Three Princes of Serendip”: as their highnesses travelled, [...] “The seeds of joy grow best in a field of peace. I choose to give Serendipity a mysterious presence, something I can’t quite put my finger on. In my search for that special photo, I prefer to see Serendipity as a beautiful, shy lady… perhaps a woodland fairy or nymph coyly hiding. [...] |
